The loss of memory and the search for identity are the main themes woven into La Urdimbre, based on the novel Telares by Fabiola Ruiz, the story of a small mountain village where the inhabitants, without realizing it, carry on a struggle between tradition and modernity, which represents the symbol of what is currently happening in different parts of Mexico and the world. La Urdimbre tells about what happens in the indigenous territories with the arrival of the capitalistic culture and how this is destroying the lives of its inhabitants. The performance talks about the transition to a modernity that sweeps away customs and identities, about the struggle between tradition and modernity, outlining a broader panorama on popular culture, including the role of women, machismo, religion, ways of speaking, habits and time management.

This project is the result of an ongoing research of performer and director Dora Arreola and her company Mujeres en Ritual. It was further developed in a Residency at La MaMa Umbria that involved the collaboration of the great theatre master Rena Mirecka.
